Leanne Tyler, RN

Leanne Tyler is a Registered Nurse with 28 years of experience working with Indigenous and Inuit individuals, families and communities in Treaty 3, Treaty 5, Treaty 9 and Nunavut. She received her nursing degree from the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology. The first eight years of her career were spent in the Indigenous communities of Northwestern Ontario, learning primary health care, public health and emergency services in remote fly-in communities of Attawapiskat, Webequie, Nibinamik, Eabametoong and Mishkeegogamang. During this time, a certificate in Outpost Nursing was obtained from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and provided the opportunity to work/learn in Iqaluit and Cape Dorset on Baffin Island. As the Nursing Director of the Shibogama First Nation Health Authority, working with Wapekeka First Nation, Wunnumin Lake First Nation, Kingfisher Lake First Nation, and Musselwhite Mine, she supervised nursing services and community programs to facilitate the development of nursing leadership skills and provide the foundation to manage in-patient programs at the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre. Leanne is currently working with Dr. Jumah at Lakehead University on the Maternal-infant Support Worker Program, supporting the professional development of Indigenous women delivering health services in their home communities to pregnant women, their children and their families. The focus of this program is reclaiming traditional knowledge, skills and ceremonies around birth and family centered care.
